The Haslam College of Business (HCB) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for an Academic Advisor 1 (12-month, Full-time, Exempt, Non-tenure Track) in the Undergraduate Programs Office. The Undergraduate Programs Office provides comprehensive academic advising services for approximately 8,500 undergraduate students. The college has a collaborative advising team focused on assisting students in developing and implementing sound educational plans consistent with their values and academic and career goals.
Reporting to the Assistant Director, this position exists to assess undergraduate students' academic goals, evaluate their progress towards those goals, provide advice on the most effective course of action and provide the college and university with analysis of that progress on both an individual and a programmatic level. The position advises students for all nine undergraduate business majors, university general education, and academic policies and procedures and provides professional support for the college by teaching first-year business seminar classes and managing various college operations. The position provides an exciting opportunity to be a part of UT's strategic advising plan that integrates academic and career advising with self-exploration, leadership development, and experiential learning.
Responsibilities
- Academic advising and mentoring of students
- Assist students in the exploration of their goals, interests, strengths, values, and concerns through positive open-ended questions and intentional advising strategies.
- Assist students throughout their undergraduate experience in developing academic plans that meet goals and future aspirations.
- Refer students to college and campus resources, programs, and support systems that promote academic success, career development, experience learning, and engagement.
- Meets formally with students each semester through scheduled appointments and walk-ins
- Evaluates students' progress
- Reconciles students' demonstrated abilities against desired goals
- Informs students of academic options and advises on best course of action
- Educates students regarding college and university policies and procedures
- Enforces college and university policies and procedures
- Evaluates students' needs and makes referrals to appropriate campus resources
- Develops strategic plans to accomplish academic goals that includes internships and study abroad
- Fosters professional and personal development
- Additional communication and follow up with students and families (per FERPA)
- Administrative functions related to advising
- Creates and maintains confidential, detailed student records
- Ensures accurate electronic records are maintained relating to:
- Communication of and progress towards degree requirements
- Petitions seeking exceptions to or substitutions of university and college policies and requirements
- Interactions between advisor and student, parent and other university officials
- Monitors course capacities and course prerequisites
- Participate in orientation activities
- Other duties as required. Including, but not limited to:
- Retention and persistence activities
- Academic probation support efforts
- Student development activities
- Search committees
- Various internal and external committee work
- Teach BUAD 100
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- Master's degree (or degree can be earned within one academic term of employment)
- Experience in working with a diverse group of students in a collegiate setting.
- Experience in advising and/or student development. Examples: advising graduate assistant or practicum, mentoring and/or academic coaching.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
- Preferred experience in academic advising in higher ed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required:
- The ability to relate effectively to a diverse university community (students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents)
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Appropriate computer and IT skills
- Demonstrated organizational skills, and ability to handle simultaneous projects
