Job Description
The College of Liberal Arts Dean's Office invites applications for a dynamic, innovative, and experienced leader to serve as the Associate Dean of the college. The Associate Dean of Research & Graduate Affairs within the College of Liberal Arts is a member of the College senior leadership team and works with the Dean in setting policy and practices related to matters of research and innovation, graduate programs, and inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility within the college. This position will play a key role in shaping and advancing the college's research agenda in alignment with the university and college strategic goals and will have oversight over all aspects of the college's research enterprise to raise our R1 ranking and move the college forward in achieving the Association of American Universities metrics. The position will develop the college's research infrastructure, including a focus on graduate programs, support faculty and graduate student research, fostering a culture of equity and inclusion, and strengthen graduate programs to align with the college's mission and values.
This is a 12-month, Administrative Faculty A position with a faculty appointment in a CLA department. Working hours are typically 8-5pm, Monday through Friday.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Innovation
- Lead and support faculty in securing external funding for research initiatives, creative projects, and interdisciplinary partnerships.
- Cultivate a culture of innovation by developing resources, programs, and workshops to advance research productivity and scholarly output across the college.
- Develop initiatives that encourage collaboration with external institutions, including industry, government, and community partners, to support applied and community-engaged research.
- Promote the visibility of faculty and graduate student research and creative work within and beyond the college.
- Work closely with and collaborate with the Office of Research and Innovation
- Work closely with the college's Grants and Project Analyst 2 who assists with faculty grants, budgeting, operations management, technical report writing and InfoEd assistance.
- Work closely with the Director of the Grant Sawyer Center for Social Justice whose goal is to help facilitate research opportunities for faculty and graduate students by providing resources on topics of judicial decision making, capital trials and jury decision making, among other topics. The Center also facilitates research by assisting in the development of proposals for external funding for research on justice and by providing an opportunity
for students in various programs to conduct database research on their theses and dissertations on justice issues. - Work closely with the Director of Center for Basque Studies whose main goal is to conduct research on the Basques and to disseminate the results of interdisciplinary research on the Basques to a local, national and international audience through publications (including those produced by the Center for Basque Studies Press), conference presentations, lectures for the general public and creative activities.
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA)
- Lead the implementation and ongoing assessment of the college's IDEA initiatives, working closely with faculty, staff, and students to foster an inclusive and equitable environment.
- Partner with the university's Office of Diversity and Inclusion to align college strategies with broader institutional goals and programs, including those related to recruitment, retention, and mentoring of faculty and graduate students from historically underrepresented groups.
- When requested, participate as a member of standing university- and college-level committees, including the college's Diversity Committee and the university's Diversity Council, that address issues relevant to the hiring, professional success, and retention of diverse faculty members, staff, and students
Graduate Affairs
- Oversee the college's graduate programs, ensuring alignment with the college's academic standards and strategic goals, and Graduate School policies. These include: DMA in Music; MFA in Art; PhD programs in History, Political Science, English, Anthropology, Basque Studies; MA programs in Criminal Justice, Spanish, French, Communication Studies, Philosophy, Sociology, and Gender, Race and Identity (about 400 graduate students)
- Collaborate with program graduate directors to provide strategic direction and to assess and enhance the quality and competitiveness of graduate curricula, as well as student support services.
- Oversee the director of the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Social Psychology and the Director the online self-sustaining MA/PhD in Justice Studies
- Develop new, market-responsive graduate programs and micro-credentialing opportunities that respond to student interests and workforce needs.
- Advocate for and secure funding to support graduate student scholarships, research assistantships, and other resources to strengthen the college's ability to attract top-tier students.
- Oversee number of department GTA/GRAs, requests, funding, and duties.
- Work closely with and collaborate with the Dean of the Graduate School
Management and Special Projects
- Serve as a member of the college's executive leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and policy development to further the college's mission and values.
- Analyze and interpret data to evaluate program success and areas for improvement, reporting regularly to the dean and providing recommendations for policy changes.
- Nominate faculty for research focused awards for Regent, VPRI, Provost, CLA
- Other projects as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Education: A Ph.D. or terminal degree in a liberal arts discipline or closely related field and a minimum of three (3) years of related managerial and professional work experience.
- Related Experience: Academic administrative leadership experience, chairing a department for one to two terms, an established research record in the applicant's discipline, familiarity with accessing external funding in the liberal arts college-level teaching experience; currently tenured
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in fostering interdisciplinary research and developing partnerships with external organizations.
- Proven track record in supporting faculty development and graduate student success.
Compensation
Administrative Faculty - E

Grants-in-Aid for Faculty Employees

The College of Liberal Arts encompasses the disciplines of the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as housing the School of the Arts and the School of Social Research and Justice Studies. It also is a key partner in exciting interdisciplinary programs such as computational linguistics, bilingual media and journalism, forensic studies, cybersecurity, and six dual majors with the College of Education. With the recent acquisition of the Lake Tahoe location, we have gained two self-sustaining MFA programs, both complementing the existing high-residency, MFA programs: Creative Writing and Interdisciplinary Arts.
